THE MUSIC
READ IT: Memory Verse: Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things. Psalm 98:1 NIV
HEAR IT: Sing a Song
We sing to celebrate. “Happy birthday to you!”
We sing to learn new things. “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOP.”
Sometimes we sing just go be goofy. “I said a Boom Chicka BOOM!”
There is another type of singing though. God wants us to sing songs to Him. It doesn’t matter whether you have a gorgeous singing voice or you sound like an old toad croaking from the bottom of a bucket. Shout it out! Screech it out! Mumble it out! It doesn’t matter how it comes out. God wants to hear our voices sing praises. It’s another way we can talk to God. We can yodel about the good times, harmonize his many blessings, or belt out prayers from the bottom of our hearts. Lift up a song to Him right now. It will make your heart happier and your step will be a bit springier. Take time to sing about the marvelous things of God. Go on now, little darling. Sing!

STUDY IT: Sing and Learn
Do you remember your preschool years? You woke up each morning and someone was singing a wake-up song. It was time for breakfast and someone was singing a prayer of blessing. I assume someone sang to teach you colors, shapes, and numbers. I think there was even a potty song. Really? Why so much singing? The answer is easy. Songs stick in your head. Go on; try to remember one of those preschool songs. You still remember them, don’t you? Well, God’s word is often put to music for those very same reasons. In fact, there is a whole book of songs called Psalms right there in the middle of the Bible. Psalm 47:1-2 says, “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth.” God wants to hear your praises whether you are clapping, shouting, or singing. He wants tunes about Him to get stuck in your head. Someday you will wake up feeling pretty blue and His songs will cheer you up. Someday you might wonder what in the world you’re supposed to do with a problem that is staring you in your face, and His song will help. Sing and remember his love for you!

TRY IT: Musical Cups
Items needed:
Eight drinking cups made of glass (the same size), pencil and water
Directions:
1. Fill the glasses part full with water. Put different amounts of water into each glass.
2. Arrange the glasses in order from emptiest to fullest.
3. Use a pencil to strike the side of each glass. The glasses will play a different note for each cup.
4. Play the scale in order.
5. Create your own tune and sing out praises to God.
Discussion Question:
These musical cups are made possible by vibrations causing sound. The more water in a glass, the vibrations slow down, and the tone is deeper. With less water, the vibrations are faster, and the tone is higher. God does not care how high or low we sing. He cares whether the words are coming from our heart. What is your favorite praise song? What do the words of the song really mean?
LIVE IT: Marvelous Singing
God has done marvelous things in our lives and the lives of those who have gone before us. He saved Noah and the animals from the flood. He rescued Jonah from the belly of a giant fish. He healed the sick, blind, and injured. And more recently, he created you! These are definitely marvelous things. When great things happen, the newspapers print stories, the televisions stations film the action, and messages are spread all over the world. Singing is another form of spreading marvelous news. Remember this verse and sing out songs for the whole world to hear. People are listening. Sing!
SHARE IT: Sing It Out
Go caroling! It doesn’t matter if it’s Christmas time or summertime. Sing praise songs in the park. Sing hymns in the grocery store. Shout out songs of worship while you are standing in line at the amusement park. Bring along some friends and family members and sing the day away. You might be surprised how many people join you and sing along.
