THE OWL
READ IT: Memory Verse: If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God. James 1:5 NIV
HEAR IT: WHOOOO Do We Ask?
The wise old owl
Sits in a tree
The wise old owl
He speaks to me.
Why is the owl thought to be a wise animal? Is it his eyes, his hunting ability, or that bellowing hoot? In so many stories, the main character seeks out the owl for guidance and advice. When you have a problem or question, don’t talk to the owl. We have someone far greater and wiser to consult. Ask God for the wisdom that you seek. He is the maker of the owl, the creator of the universe, the one who knew you before you were born. Sounds more qualified than our feathered friend, now doesn’t it? When times are tough, stop guessing what is wrong and what is right. God can help you. His eyes see further, His wings fly faster, and His words set our hearts at ease. Now Darling, don’t soar off without one more key word. You have to “ASK” Him. Save the guessing game for the birds.
PRAY IT: (Pray with your group)
STUDY IT: Follow the Leader
Who do you follow? How about your baby brother? I’m sure he would lead you through his messy room to his favorite toy. Would you follow the dog? That would probably take you to his favorite spot in the backyard. No, you follow someone you trust, someone wise- who is fair and is known for making good decisions. Back in the Bible days, that man was King Solomon. One night God appeared to Solomon in a dream. God said, “Ask for what you most want, and I will give it to you.” Solomon could have asked for mounds and mounds of gold. He could have requested great super powers and strength. I guess he could have begged for plates and plates of his favorite snacks, but instead he asked for something much greater. King Solomon asked for wisdom. He understood that he did not have the answer to all of life’s questions. If he was going to be the ruler over all the people, he would need wisdom only God could give. And you know what? God gave him wisdom, but he also gave him riches, power, and I’m sure he had plenty of his favorite snacks. God gave King Solomon wisdom and you can have His wisdom too. Just ask!

TRY IT: Owl Wings
Items needed:
A wall and your arm
Directions:
1. Stand next to a wall with your arm pressed up against it. Imagine you are trying to flap your wings but the wall is stopping you.
2. Push firmly against the wall with your arm for 20 seconds.
3. Step away from the wall and relax your arm. Your arm will float high into the air.
Discussion Question:
Muscle memory makes this flapping owl trick possible. Your muscles still think you are pressing against the wall. We can trick our body sometimes, but we shouldn’t trick our mind. Wisdom comes only through God. Believing and trusting in Him is the only way to true wisdom. How can we grow wise in the Lord?
LIVE IT: Why Wisdom?
Why would a young lady need wisdom? I hear you wondering that. Sure, Mom and Dad take care of you. Teachers feed you knowledge. Church leaders guide your spiritual steps. So, why is wisdom important right here and right now to a kid like you? I’m glad you asked. How do you act when a new kid joins your class at school? What could you do to make them feel welcome on that very important first day? Maybe you’re looking for a best friend. Should you just pick the first girl you see in class? Or perhaps you are already thinking about your future college or career choice. No topic is too small or big for God. Ask Him- he knows it all!
SHARE IT: Wise Words
Wisdom often comes through God’s word, the Bible. Write down some of your favorite verses on slips of paper and leave them everywhere you go. Put one on the bathroom mirror and one on the refrigerator door. Leave one for the waitress at the restaurant and tuck one into the pages of your favorite library book. Spread God’s word and wisdom around to everyone you meet.
